But if you want to see the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness without the hassle of obtaining a YNP Permit, then Cooke City is your place to start. Surrounded by the Gallatin and Shoeshone National Forest there are literally hundreds of miles of hiking trails. The Clarks Fork Trail and the “Off The Beaten Path” trail are just a few favorites. Camping: Having a hard time finding a campground that ISN’T FULL in Yellowstone? Cooke City has two (2) National Forest Campgrounds within 8 miles of the NE Entrance of Yellowstone. Soda Butte Campground and Colter Campground. Colter Campground does not use a reservation system, it is managed on a first-come, first-served basis. Be aware the campground may fill up on weekends & holidays during the summer months and you should arrive in the early afternoon to ensure there is a space available for the night.
