Surprisingly, there are many National Forest Campgrounds near Cooke City and the NE Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Most, if not all are First Come First Serve and are quite beautiful. Most National Park Campgrounds have water and Vault Toilets. In fact, Soda Butte Campground is approximately 1 mile from Cooke City and only 6 miles from the North East Entrance of Yellowstone. All National Forest Campgrounds have a “Camphost” that live in the Campground during Open Season. Big Moose Resort has full hookups for RV’s. Always make sure you plan early. AND ALWAYS pack up your garbage and practice Leave No Trace

DISPERSED CAMPING
Pilot Creek Dispersed Camping
The Shoshone National Forest allows dispersed camping along a mile or so of the Beartooth Highway in the Pilot Creek area. There is one large area on the south side of US 212 about 9 miles east of Cooke City which has multiple undeveloped campsites as well as a vault toilet. There are a number of additional potential campsites on both sides of the road for a mile or so. While most of these sites have “user-built” fire rings, there are no other amenities. The Pilot Creek area is administered by the Clark’s Fork Ranger District of the Shoshone National Forest. While they don’t provide information on the web, you can contact them for additional information.

Beartooth Plateau
The Clarks Fork Ranger District encompasses much of the Beartooth Plateau, which is located in northwest Wyoming, near Yellowstone National Park. The Beartooth Plateau gets its name from Beartooth Peak, which has the appearance of a bear’s tooth. The scenery here is breathtaking – rugged mountain peaks and expansive plateaus, alpine tundra, glaciers, wildlife, wildflowers, and rare land types found nowhere else in the United States. Travel the Beartooth All-American Road, U S Highway 212, to take in the views. (The road is closed in the winter.)
